Tom Cruise Joins the Bad Dad Hall of Fame

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s daughter Suri is the latest nepo baby to ditch their dad’s last name, earning Cruise his official induction into the Estranged/Complicated A-Lister Father Dynamic Hall of Fame, where he will preside among ranking members like Alec Baldwin, David Beckham (for one child at least), and most recently, Brad Pitt, who as of July, only has two remaining children who haven’t filed to change their surname to Jolie.

For Suri, however—whom Page Six epithetized as “once the most famous baby in America”—she has not had a relationship with Cruise for most of her life. When Cruise and Holmes split in 2012, Holmes was granted full custody of then 6-year-old Suri, which reporting at the time suggested was to protect her from the influence of Scientology. Suri is now 20, a junior at Carnegie Mellon, and, according to voter registration documents obtained by Page Six, now legally going by the name Suri Noelle (Noelle being Holmes’s middle name). Last week, TMZ also reported that Suri would be performing in a production of Midsummer! at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival along with her classmates, so while she is following in both her parents’ footsteps, she only wants to be associated with one.

Page Six confirmed that the name change was not filed in Pennsylvania, meaning she may have changed her name in New York, a state where name change requests are sealed. So, it’s unclear how long she has been going by this new name.

Regardless, Cruise is still estranged, still a Scientologist, and still being demoted by his child. If it’s true that Suri has not had a relationship with Tom for most of her life, then why should she have to carry the burden of the man’s name? And the same goes for the Pitt children as well, who allegedly endured abuse from Pitt and witnessed the abuse Pitt inflicted against Jolie. Why should they have to have his last name? As for Brooklyn Beckham, we will just have to wait and see if he changes his name to “Peltz.”

The new mission for A-list dads—should they choose to accept it—is: don’t be like these guys. Then, maybe, your Hollywood stage name might live on to the next generation.
