Another Door’s Been Slammed Shut for Legal Immigration, Because Apparently We’re in Hell

On Tuesday, the State Department—the very same that deemed reproductive freedom and DEI “human rights violations,” does not seem to have a world map on hand, and which is led by irony nightmare Marco Rubio—announced its latest malicious, idiot-laden move. Effective immediately, it’s issuing a sudden pause to all immigration visa applications from around the world.

Alas, by this point, it’s not hard to imagine the reasons why the administration would do such a thing. It put forward its own shoddy excuse, though, saying that it wants to use the extra time to carry out “in-depth training” for U.S. embassies and consulates, making also clear that this was a matter of national security.

Per a State Dept. spokesperson who originally broke the news to the Financial Times, the new initiative is to “ensure all consular officers are fully equipped to evaluate every visa applicant comprehensively and consistently”—though it’s unclear how, exactly, such evaluations would occur.

The spokesperson added, “A more prosperous America means ensuring that visa applicants are not likely to become a public charge, as defined under US law and regulation, and not likely to become dependent on US public benefits reserved for qualified Americans in need.” Ah. There we go. We’re expected to wait, then, for the administration to wrest even more immigrant-related rights with bated breath.

And just like the other instances of the administration’s actions oozing with vengeful-looking coincidence, the directive comes just days after a federal judge overturned the administration’s block on processing visas from 75 countries—which included Somalia, Haiti, and Iran. (The administration had first announced and implemented this new policy in January, though on Friday, U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas ruled in a more-than-60-page ruling that it was acting “contrary to law.”) On Monday as well, the administration outlined its plans to revoke visas from individuals that entered the U.S. for tourism or business, and have since applied for asylum. Are we that eager to rot in hell, guys?

Monstrously, the new directive included standing up applicants who was already scheduled for interviews and telling them to wait for a new date and time. Speaking to the FT, Brian Simmons, a senior consular manager at an immigration law firm, said many applicants who received notice of postponement this week had also “already spent thousands of dollars and disrupted their lives to attend scheduled interviews, only to have their appointments canceled at the last minute.” 

Moreover, it imposes yet another roadblock for noncitizens in the U.S., a terrifying addition to the countless ways we’ve heard of people “doing things right” and “attending every appointment”—yet still being caught in the trawl of ICE’s cruel deportation campaign. Rot in hell challenge, indeed.
