Viola Davis Does Not Accept Your Apology

Has EGOT-award-winning Viola Davis ever been wrong in her life? Short answer: No. But if you want the longer answer, or more evidence of her greatness, look no further than the way she went straight for the jugular of Target’s neck this week.
On Monday, the retailer Target announced that it had “pulled an offensive Halloween costume” off the shelves, which “should never have been part of our assortment.” The listing in question, marketed as “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown,” made my jaw drop at first glance. The costume featured a blatant racist minstrel caricature and was modeled on the site by a young Black boy. The retailer apologized, but Davis is—rightfully—not having it.
And of course, this incident follows in the shadow of Target’s decision to roll back Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives after Donald Trump’s inauguration last year, so yes, it is that deep, actually. And who could have put it better than the legend herself?
“Target, I do not accept your apology, and I do not believe that you understand the impact… the pain… the dehumanization of the above. These images laid the foundation and the ideology for every atrocity that has been committed against my people.
We MATTER!!
You have shown us that you are not on OUR side.”
Like many people, I’ve been wondering: How could this have happened? How could this have been accidental? How many people and various departments did this have to go through before it was plastered on the site? Photographers? Copywriters? Marketing? Nobody stopped for one second to think critically? Or is the whole place just run by AI now? Many questions, zero answers, and one half-ass apology.
“Target, for real? I’m not surprised, but this is a new low,” comedian LaTrez Anderson also voiced to Instagram, per the Cut.
“As a company, we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry,” Target’s statement continued. “We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members, and partners. Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won’t happen again.” Hmmmm. Maybe “how this happened” was that no one was around to say, hey, global retailing giant, this one might not be an appropriate CHILDREN’S costume.
Target gutted DEI, backed away from Black employee programs & Black business partnerships, then somehow approved Jim Crow cosplay for kids. The apology is cute, but the receipts already told us who was in the room when Black voices left it. https://t.co/uP1c4Ri0hP pic.twitter.com/7Zy9S3dY2g
