Ariana Grande Is Stepping Back from Public Life

On Friday, Ariana Grande—amid her Eternal Sunshine world tour and post-Wicked success—released her eighth studio album, petal. Two days later, she announced she would be stepping back from public life, including from her commitment to the West End revival of Sunday in the Park with George with Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey. So what happened in those two days? Well, the world bore witness to the music video for Grande’s title track, and thus, the discourse simmering in her comment section for years reached a critical mass.

In the music video for “petal,” also released Friday, Grande plays Pepper, an aspiring performer repeatedly rejected by a room of menacing men-in-suits who pick apart her flaws and insist they prefer the “old” version of her. With every chorus, Grande sings, “It’s such a fucked situation / Petal in the pavement,” while Pepper grows increasingly fed up with the men’s relentless criticism, culminating in her taking a chainsaw to their necks. And (as the internet allows) everyone had an opinion, specifically over the debate of Grande’s health. So much so that on Sunday, Grande’s reps told People that, “Ariana will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour,” as the outlet cited “scrutiny surrounding her health and body intensifies.”

“She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny,” the rep added. “This tour has been a beautiful experience for her. She loves her fans and has loved every minute of this tour so much.”

“A source close to Grande” also told the outlet, “She performs a very physical show, and there is a lot of athleticism involved. She performs healthily and successfully at a very high level night after night.”

The question of whether to comment on a public figure’s apparent weight loss has stumped the masses, especially considering Grande herself specifically asked people not to do this very thing in her 2024 single, “Yes, And?” (“Don’t comment on my body, do not reply / Your business is yours, and mine is mine.”)

“It’s not about wanting the old Ariana back. It’s about wanting her to be healthy,” reads the top comment on the music video with 66k likes and 400-something replies. Tens of thousands of comments echo similar concerns.

While some are in the camp of respecting Grande’s wish to leave her business to her and not comment on a woman in the public sphere’s changing body, others, including those in the eating disorder recovery community, maintain that ignoring the elephant in the room risks “normalization,” especially given the context of our current Ozempic age. Always one to add her two cents, Jameela Jamil even entered the chat to say, “This poor woman is possibly dying right in front of us. This outfit is designed to accentuate the thinness for discourse. Her team are thoroughly irresponsible for not guiding her away from this deeply damaging image for her young fans to see so glamorized.” Another top comment on the music video reads, “At this point, I’m judging her team, friends, and family. This is insane.”

Indeed, two things can be true: A) Grande has repeatedly asked the public not to comment on her body, and she deserves the same privacy as anyone else. And B) it’s understandable why this conversation has become so difficult to avoid. To quote the song I’ve been listening to on repeat, it’s a fucked situation. 

The final show of Grande’s tour is September 1, after which her sabbatical will commence. Her representative’s statement to People does not mention Focker-in-Law, her upcoming movie with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro that premieres in November. So it’s unclear whether she will participate in any press or red-carpet appearances for the film.
