Trump and Musk Are Friends Again. How Convenient.

Trump and Elon Musk’s spectacular situationship is apparently back in full swing. Guess the two just couldn’t survive the gravitational pull of a midterm election.

After an epic fight where the two publicly ripped each other apart—with Musk in June 2025 tweeting (and deleting) that Trump was in the Epstein files—the two men are talking again. And according to new reporting from the Wall Street Journal, Musk is preparing to spend at least $100 million to help Republicans maintain control of Congress this November. In other words … the president of the U.S. and the richest man in the world are besties again!

To quickly recap, the Trump-Musk relationship imploded after Musk left the administration in June 2025 and attacked Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful’ spending bill. Things quickly got heated and personal: Trump threatened to terminate Musk’s government contracts; Musk suggested Trump should be impeached; and then came the since-deleted Epstein accusation.“Time to drop the really big bomb:@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,” he then tweeted. “Have a nice day, DJT!” Musk later said some of his posts “went too far.” Same guy who somehow turned his chatbot into a Nazi, BTW.

But behind the scenes, some of Trump’s closest allies apparently started working on getting the nightmare duo back together. The WSJ reports that Vice President JD Vance, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and other mutual friends helped facilitate the reunion. There were back-channel phone calls, invites to Mar-a-Lago, a trip to China, and a White House soiree. Reportedly, the reunion was fast tracked after the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, who spent months before his death trying to repair their friendship. 

In June, Trump sent Musk a congratulatory note after he became a billionaire, and Musk abandoned his threat to launch a third political party, which could have siphoned votes away from Republicans. And NOW, there’s $100 million on the table.

Musk wants to revive America PAC—the super political action committee he used to help elect Trump in 2024—for a massive Republican turnout operation. Axios reported last month that the group plans to target competitive Senate races in states including Michigan, Maine, Iowa, Ohio and Alaska, alongside key House races. The total investment could ultimately reach $120 million. 

America PAC spent more than $260 million during the 2024 election, and Musk became the largest individual political donor of that cycle. And now that Republicans are trying to protect extremely narrow congressional majorities in a midterm election that could determine whether Trump spends the last two years of his presidency passing legislation left and right and dealing with a sycophantic Congress—or facing investigations and gridlock. Trump is also terrified of losing the midterms because it could mean impeachment, so there’s a lot on the line here. 

Apparently, such high stakes are worth breaking no contact.

But like all situationships, make-ups take time and this isn’t exactly back to the honeymoon stage. The WSJ reports that Trump and Musk now speak around once a month mostly about AI and other global events, although Trump says the relationship will never be what it once was. Still, people around Trump say the president still dwells on their breakup, and that he has privately admitted that Musk’s attacks hurt him, while Musk has complained about Trump’s “ingratitude.”

But with control of Congress on the line, Trump needs the pocket of one of the richest men alive—and conveniently for him, Musk’s on board with spending nine figures electing Republicans over building the third party he was threatening to create a year ago. As he told the Economist last month, “I think I got a little too involved in politics… got carried away, frankly.”

At the end of the day, nothing repairs a friendship quite like $100 million.
